Moving day in Christchurch: a simple room-by-room checklist

The week before

Start with the rooms you use least. Spare bedrooms, the garage, storage cupboards and bookshelves can be packed a week out without affecting daily life. Pack, seal and label every box with the room it belongs in at the new place — not where it came from. A box marked “kitchen bench, everyday dishes” is useful on arrival; a box marked “misc” is a chore you hand to your future self.

Work through one room at a time and finish it before starting the next. Half-packed rooms multiply stress because nothing feels done. As each room finishes, stack its sealed boxes together so loading day has clear staging areas.

The kitchen

Kitchens take longest, so start them early. Leave out one plate, cup and set of cutlery per person plus the kettle, and pack everything else. Wrap glassware individually — paper or bubble wrap around each piece, dividers between them, cushioning top and bottom. Empty the pantry of open packets and anything that will leak. Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before the move and disconnect the washing machine and dishwasher, securing hoses and loose parts.

Bedrooms and living areas

Strip beds last and pack bedding in large boxes or bags that can ride on top of the load. Wardrobe boxes — tall boxes with a hanging rail — save hours of folding if you have suits or dresses worth keeping creased. Dismantle bed frames and shelving units, bag every screw and fitting, and tape the bag to the frame it belongs to.

Electronics travel best in their original boxes; otherwise wrap screens in blankets, never stack anything on them, and photograph cable setups so reconnection takes minutes. What travels with you, not in the truck

Set aside an essentials bag: phone chargers, keys and documents for both addresses, medications, basic toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding for the first night, snacks and water, and cleaning basics. Small valuables, passports and backup drives should stay with you personally.

Moving-day order

On the day, the truck loads heaviest first — whiteware and large furniture against the cab wall — then builds back with boxes, lightest on top, everything strapped so the stack cannot shift. At the new place, boxes go straight into their marked rooms. Walk each empty room before the truck leaves. Open every cupboard, check the ceiling storage, the garden shed and under the house. The most commonly left-behind items are laundry baskets, shower caddies, items on top of wardrobes and anything plugged in behind furniture.

The last week timeline

Seven days out, confirm the truck booking and both addresses in writing, and start the least-used rooms. Five days out, the kitchen should be half packed and the freezer defrosting. Three days out, dismantle shelving and confirm parking for the truck at both ends. The day before, pack a first-night box for each bedroom — bedding, pyjamas, chargers, toiletries — plus cleaning gear for both houses, because every move ends with a clean of the old place.

On the morning itself, do a final sweep for rubbish to dump, bags to donate and items to hand to neighbours. Strip the beds, unplug the last electronics, and leave the essentials bag by the front door so it goes in your car, not the truck. A calm last hour comes entirely from the week before it.
