Your Moving-Day Checklist: Six Jobs Before the Van Arrives
The best moving days are boring. Nobody remembers a shift where everything was packed, labelled and ready — and that is exactly the point. Here are six jobs to finish before the van shows up, each one small, each one saving real time and stress.
1. Pack, tape and label by room
Every box sealed, every box labelled with its destination room on two sides. Half-packed rooms are the biggest cause of moving-day blowouts: the crew cannot load what is not ready, and loose gear fills a van badly. If you are still packing when the van arrives, the day starts an hour behind.
2. Clear a path from every room to the door
Hallways, stairs and the front-step run need to be completely clear — no shoes, no bags, no last-minute “I will move that”. Carrying a couch needs both hands and a clear line of sight. A clear path is also a safe path: most moving-day injuries are trips, not lifts.
3. Mark every fragile box twice
FRAGILE goes on two sides of the box, big and dark, so it reads from any angle in a stacked van. 4. Pack a first-night essentials bag
Bedding, phone chargers, kettle and mugs, toiletries, toilet paper, basic tools, snacks and a change of clothes — for everyone in the household, plus medications and pet food where relevant. This bag rides in your car, not the van. After a full day of shifting, it is the most valuable luggage you own.
5. Confirm parking at both ends
The van needs to sit as close to each front door as possible. Every extra metre of carry, multiplied by a hundred trips, is time and tired backs. Check for roadworks, bus stops and neighbours' cars the evening before, and have a backup plan — a cone, a kind neighbour, or a shifted start time.
6. Do a final walkthrough
When the old place looks empty, check it properly: every cupboard, shelf, wardrobe top, the hot water cupboard, under the stairs, the garage rafters, the letterbox and the back of the garden shed. The items left behind are always the small, valuable ones — and going back for them costs more than the five minutes this check takes.
